james oglethorpe
James Oglethorpe came from a very wealthy family. He was also born in London. Even though you might think snobby rich people when you think of rich people, his family was very kind and caring to the world. In 1722, he became a member of the Parliament of Commons.. This was a very rough time for Britain in which even the very famous people went to jail. Also, he had a dream. This dream was to make a land of perfection.
Charter of 1732
First, a charter is a legal document that grants special rights and privileges. The charter of 1732 was a legal document of about 6,000 words saying that the trustee's couldn't own any land, run for political office, or even earn money.
Reasons for settlement
There were three reasons for settlement. These three reasons are defense, economics, and charity. All three of these reasons were listed in the Charter of 1732. They wanted defense so they could fight off Spanish forces and defend their land. The next reason was economics. They wanted economics so they could grow new crops. In addition there was a new economy called mercantilism. That is a type of economy to help the British earn more money than it costs to make the product or service. The final reason is charity. They wanted Charity, so they could offer poor people a chance to earn money again. None of this could of happened if it weren't for James Oglethorpe.
Tomochichi
He was the leader of the Yamacraw tribe. This tribe was located in/around present day savannah. He quickly became good friends with James Oglethorpe. They couldn't of been friends if it wasn't for Mary Musgrove. She was the translator for them. He had given Oglethorpe a good view of the Savannah River. This now what we call river street. He died in 1737.
Mary Musgrove
Mar Musgrove was the translator for Oglethorpe and Tomochichi. She could translate both Yamacrawish and British. This is so because she was half British and Half Native American. His name was John Musgrove.
City of savannah
The city of Savannah was the first city that Oglethorpe established. It is also one of the oldest cities in Georgia. It is also along the Savannah River.
